Bihar: After the video of Lalu Prasad Yadav celebrating Halloween went viral, BJP targeted him, alleging that those who called Mahakumbh "useless" are now celebrating foreign festivals. In the election environment, this controversy is rapidly taking political color.
A few hours ago, some pictures and short video clips of Lalu Prasad Yadav started spreading rapidly on social media, in which he was seen in Halloween style with his grandchildren—the children were in costumes and masks, and the message “Happy Halloween” was also found in the caption of the post. Reports surfaced that this post was shared from the account of his daughter and RJD leader Rohini Acharya.
The BJP immediately made political use of the clip, raising questions about how the same leader who had earlier made comments against a religious event like the Maha Kumbh was now seen celebrating a foreign festival—and the party condemned it as an anti-faith stance. News of the statements of BJP spokespersons and social media reactions was published in many newspapers.
This incident has come to light at the same time when Bihar assembly elections are moving towards their final phase; many media reports have indicated that opposition parties are using it as an election tool and political implications are being derived from it, including timing.
Reactions have been mixed—some people are giving a mild reaction, considering the family moments to be normal, while others are targeting it as hypocrisy. Both harsh comments and support were seen on many platforms. Both local and national media compiled comments regarding the viral clip.
It is difficult to immediately say any decisive political loss or gain, but in an electoral environment, even such a minor incident can influence the perceptions of some voters—especially if the opposition presents it by linking it to religious and cultural sensitivities. Election strategizing will also depend on the fast-spreading stories of media and social media.
